Open Question: What do you think of this custody battle between a father and the state/an adoptive couple?
“When Wyatt arrived at the hospital that morning of Feb. 11, 2009, he got the shock of his 20-year-old life: Administrators insisted that no such baby was there — and no such mother.
Court records show that Wyatt’s daughter, Emma, was born Feb. 10, at that very hospital, and that she spent the next week at two Woodbridge hotels before being put up for adoption — in Utah. “We just want Emma to come home,” says Wyatt’s mother, Jeri. “My son wants his child. I want to see my granddaughter.”
More than a year later, a cross-country court fight over the child known as “Baby Emma” has yet to settle the question of whether the strawberry-blond, blue-eyed girl was illegitimately taken from her father or legally put up for adoption by her mother, 20-year-old Emily Colleen Fahland, a George Mason University student. The highly unusual dispute pits Virginia against Utah; a Stafford County judge in December awarded Wyatt custody of Emma and cited a federal kidnapping statute in ordering the state to bring her back from Utah.
Virginia officials say they lack the legal authority to follow the judge’s order.
In Salt Lake City, a Utah judge issued a competing order granting temporary custody to the adoptive couple in that state, and Emma has been living with them ever since. Attorneys for the couple say Wyatt, of Dumfries, failed to assert his parental rights in time to contest the adoption. His appeal is pending in a Utah court.
“My daughter is being held hostage,” says Wyatt, now 21, a D.C. nightclub worker who has never seen Emma. “She was kidnapped and cradle-robbed from me, and I’m baffled that nothing has been done.”
The case, which has become the talk of the nation’s close-knit circle of adoption lawyers since the Wyatts appeared on the “Dr. Phil” show, is the latest to spotlight Utah adoption laws that experts say are unusually tough on unmarried fathers. Lawyers cite at least 10 recent cases in which babies were taken to or born in Utah and adopted without an out-of-state father’s consent.”

Voting Question: What do you think of my short story? COPYRIGHT.?
OK, so this is my SHORT story for English. I’m 14 and I’m being graded on it. So what do you think? And could you possibly give me a title for it? Also, there is paragraphs on the actual thing, but it’s been squashed up on here, so yeah. And I know it ends on a cliffhanger, but that was the whole point of the story:) Thanks for your opinions!
As the mist rose on the silent lake, the wind moved through the trees, winding around the leaves and branches. As a tiny blue bird landed on one of the many lily pads perched on the pond; a cool ripple spread through the water like icy fire. The pale summer sun hid behind a still white cloud while the airy breeze rushed through the veins of the reeds. Only the whispers of two people awoke the dream.
My name is Dina Fent. I am 15 years old and this is how my story began.
My life was never quiet for me growing up. I lived with my father in a modern apartment in New York. There we polished floors and golden features with glorious furniture everywhere you turned. Life was like a fairytale for me; I was spoiled rotten and had the lifestyle ‘every girl wanted’. Everywhere I turned there were bright lights headlining my life, yellow taxis rushing about taking people from one chapter in their lives to another – good or bad. I was always curious to know how my life would have turned out had I grown up in the quiet countryside. So when I was 13 and my Dad was killed in an accident, there was only one person in the world I could go to: My mother…
She lived in an idyllic town in England. I hadn’t seen her for 8 years as she had left when I was 5. And even though I was full of hatred for her, there was this tiny feeling in the pit of my stomach that was curious to know the truth. Why had she left me?
When I reached my new home, it was like someone switching from the Arctic to the Sahara with the click of a finger. I knew no one and hardly even recognised my own mother. It was so beautiful here, so mysterious. Here the weather was never sunny. There was a constant overhang blocking the full potential of the sun. Like God wanted to make the country dull, but with the dullness came new climates I had never dealt with. I was permanently wrapped in sweaters and scarves shivering beneath my usually golden skin. To start with, I had hardly talked to my mother. We were avoiding each other but both denying to ourselves that we needed to talk. But then, on her birthday we were forced to sit down and talk. She had so much to tell me and although it bored me, I was inquisitive of the deeper secrets that her eyes read. When I tried to ask her, she misted over and I think I saw a tear in the corner of her eye. She told me of her life here and the numerous boyfriends she had acquired and how none of them had gotten close to the feeling she had had with my father. This brought me to think. Why, if she was oh so in love with my father, had she moved to England?
And so here I am.
As I heard the voices through the many trees I was torn about whether to leave or to stay and eavesdrop. As they neared, I ducked down and tucked my petite body into the groove of a tree and convinced myself I was sufficiently camouflaged into the bark, like a chameleon. As the voices reached me, I heard my mother’s voice – pretty and gentle – and a gruff, deep man’s voice. I soon realised this was Alex, a man my mother had spoken of frequently but whom I had never met. They were deep in conversation and I could sense that my mother was urging the man to keep his voice to a hushed level.
“Make sure that they’re all there. I don’t want any of them to be missing.”
“Don’t worry; I’ve checked a thousand times. Come over to pick them up at three o’clock, I just need to deliver a small package to someone.” he grunted, slyly.
“Right, I’ll be there. Make sure no one sees you leaving, I can already tell Dina is curious, without strangers strolling through the house.”
“Don’t worry babe. I’ll leave past the fountain.”
“OK, make sure they’re in order. I don’t want any mess ups this time, you know what that cost me.” She whispered.
And with that I heard her turn on her feet and hurry through the grass with the man closely in pursuit.
As I sat there, I realised my heart was heavy and that my heart was beating out of my chest. I knew at that moment that whatever it took, I had to chase the secret.

Looking around the dark basement, the shadows danced continuously mocking my presence. I looked for any clues but this area seemed only to be used for storing box after box of possessions no longer worthy to display. As my eyes mounted the stairs before my feet followed I noticed how the top step was painted red whilst the others a cool blue. It seemed odd, but I suppose I had other things on my mind. As I opened the door connecting the basement to the upper world, a cold gush of air rushed past me from the smashed window below. Looking up at the clock I saw that I had just ten minutes at the most before Al
